Non-Verbal Reasoning, explained with examples
22 January 2026 · The ElevenReady Team
Non-Verbal Reasoning (NVR) uses shapes and patterns instead of words, testing spatial awareness and logical thinking. The good news: the question types are predictable, so children improve steadily once they recognise them.
What to look for
- Odd one out — which shape doesn't follow the rule?
- Sequences — what comes next in the pattern?
- Analogies — shape A is to B as C is to…?
- Rotations & reflections — tracking how a shape changes.
The trick is a calm, systematic approach: check size, shape, shading, number and rotation in turn. Regular practice trains the eye to spot the rule quickly.
